DFS CRUFTS FRIENDS FOR LIFE WINNER - Sam Daly with Josie, a yellow Labrador Retriever

Sam Daly, a nine year old boy with a muscle wasting disease says that “things were rubbish” before assistance dog, Josie, “came to love him.” Josie, who was matched with Sam by Dogs for the Disabled in 2008, helps with Sam’s physio, opens doors and takes his socks off, all tasks that his condition, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, makes too difficult for him to do on his own.Since Sam and Josie have been together Sam has become much more confident and outgoing, because he is proud to talk about his new best friend.

Dr Catheryn Mellersh - Animal Health Trust

There are many fine charities working in the field of animal welfare but the Animal Health Trust (AHT) is the one whose actions and achievements provide the greatest long-term benefit for companion animals. AHT vets not only treat thousands of sick dogs, cats and horses each year, they pioneer better ways of doing so, thus improving veterinary practice worldwide. At the same time, AHT scientists study the diseases and viruses afflicting companion animals in order to find new ways of reducing their frequency and their severity and, if possible, eradicating them altogether.

Tyler - a five year old Gordon Setter suffered multiple injuries when he was hit by the express train nearly three years ago The accident left him with a smashed pelvis, a badly broken keft leg and a number of broken toes in is right leg. He underwent three major operations and extensive veterinary care to get back on the road to recovery.

DFS CRUFTS FRIENDS FOR LIFE FINALIST - Sgt David Heyhoe and Treo. Treo is an eight-year-old Labrador who has been an AES (Arms Explosive Dog) since he was two. He is trained to search weapons and explosives – his mission is to search in operational theatres such as Afghanistan. Treo had completed operational tasks before, but during March 2008 was deployed to the notorious Helmand Province to search for weapons and munitions concealed by the Taliban.
